Tom was voted top military science student at Loyola University in Chicago and is a former member of the U.S. Junior Olympic fencing team. Tom received his MA in Leadership & Training (MALT) from Royal Roads University (RRU is a former military college based in Hatley Castle, the setting for the X-Men film series). He has been a manager and administrator in both the private and public sectors. He is the owner of TJM Services-Human Resource Solutions, a pool of training consultants. Prior to working for the federal government, Tom trained managers for a number of private sector firms including Sun Nutritional Products and Boots, Canada, Ltd.

Tom has received recognition awards from the City of Victoria and Royal Roads University. He is also the recipient of a Deputy Minister's Commendation Award from the Department of National Defense for acting as an internal consultant and contributing to the creation of a Most Effective Organization (MEO) within Base Construction and Engineering at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt. Tom is an RRU "lead" faculty member and he has been involved in both on-line and on-campus delivery and program development strategies in the MALT Program, the MBA Program and the Executive Education Program at RRU. He is currently an associate faculty member.

Tom has also been a faculty member in the AMIT (Microsoft Certification) Program at the University of Victoria and at Vancouver Community College. Tom has delivered one-to-one counseling in leadership workshops delivered to public sector managers for the Canadian Centre for Management Development. Tom also recently delivered workshops to Canadian Forces Medical Services Staff at Base Borden in Ontario. He has carried out RRU funded research with Dr. Michael Picard (founder of "Café Philosophy") on ethical leadership program evaluation (using the Kirkpatrick Model). He has designed and delivered courses at CFB Esquimalt to both military and civilian staff including: Workplace Ethics, Decision-Making and Emotional Intelligence.
